Another week, another delay from ACX on the audiobook version of Neon Sands. As soon as available I'll let you know! I watched Jean Claude Van Johnson on Prime which was pretty funny if you're a JCVD fan and understand all the in-jokes. Guava Island too, with Donald Glover and Rihanna, was a nice, short (1-hour) piece, filled with his music, some nice animation, and an island-set morality tale. The Risen Part 2 is out now!  I first menstruated when I was nine years old; waking in bed to a small puddle of dampness, the morning light warming through the heavy curtains. When I felt the wetness there was shame, making itself known in the tears that came. It had been years since I wet the bed. I sat up slowly, and it felt as though I’d tipped something over, such was the gushing. The emptying. I squeezed as hard as I could and finally it stopped coming. It was too cold in the winter air and too warm beneath the layer of blankets to get up, so I guessed it was still real early, and figured it would dry. Two hours later and the day at full bloom was pressing into my bedroom, up the peeled wallpaper and the cracks of plaster, black mould spots in the corners of the ceiling. I wriggled my hips. It felt sticky. It would smell bad, I thought, wary of lifting the blanket. Mother would not be happy. I tentatively put a hand down there, feeling for the damp. Instead it was tacky, like wet cornbread dough, and when I brought my fingers to the light they were the colour of the mould.

Kickstarter

Most reading this won't be aware that I work for 3dtotal Publishing - a publisher that specialises in high end art books. One of our latest is The Art of Gu Zheng Wei (Guweiz), currently on Kickstarter and sitting around the £160k mark. It will be a beautiful book, and well worth checking out if you like the look of his artwork. This is not so much a plug, as just a little look into what I do for my day job. It's also a hint of my plans to come, where I hope to round off my own Neon series with a Kickstarter for the final book, and with plenty of experience behind me I hope to be able to do it justice!

Viewing pleasures

It's all go at work and with the novel writing, so haven't caught much. I started the Picard series, and though I will watch it all, I'm finding much of it forced character-wise, plot-wise, all-wise! I guess I miss the episodic nature of Trek. And good writing. O.O. Speaking of which, I thought Uncut Gems was a cut above, a force of nature that ramped up the stress along the way. It was a good example of how to have your characters make stupid decisions - under different circumstances each of Sandler's decisions could seem contrived and forced to cause conflict for the film to ride on, but by the end you realise this is the character. He is Sandler-esque despite himself, but having watched him in the actor's roundtable and knowing the effort he put in to research, you can call it one of his best performances.
